Emma Coombs
Group Legal Assistant, GoCo Group
We take ten with Emma Coombs, a Group Legal Assistant at GoCo Group, to hear about her passion for Law and how she found her perfect role.
Tell us a bit about your life before you joined GoCo Group

I’m originally from Newport. After school, I left Newport to complete a Law degree at Southampton Solent University. Then, I moved back to Newport to work at an insurance company. I’ve always enjoyed traveling and have a particular interest in experiencing new cultures, so I decided to make the move to China to live and work there for six months. When I returned, I started working at GoCo as a Customer Service Assistant while also studying for the Legal Practice Course part-time.

How long have you worked at GoCo?

I’ve been with GoCo for over three years. I started as a Customer Service and Complaints Assistant. Then, after two years, I moved roles within the Service team to become Business Service Advisor. I mainly concentrated on obtaining and analysing data from our insurance partners.

What role are you in now?

Recently, I moved into a new role as GoCo Group Legal Assistant. It’s ideal for me as I’m able utilise my legal training as well as gaining valuable experience in a variety of legal areas.

What got you interested in Legal?

I became interested in Law whilst studying the subject at school. During this time, an incident occurred whereby I felt a personal injustice, which only led me to want to gain a deeper understanding of the legal system!

Did you feel supported by GoCo to study while working here?

Yes, I have felt very supported by GoCo to pursue my studies whilst working. The flexible working policy has enabled me to attend the University of South Wales one day a week to complete the Legal Practice Course. When it came to exam periods and I needed to take various days of annual leave or change my university day off, this was always accommodated with ease by my manager.
Did you feel supported to move from your current role to the legal team?

Completely. I initially started my new role for one day a week. This was so I could adjust, get to know the team and see the type of legal work they undertake on behalf of the company. I’ve been in my role full-time since November 2019, and the support I’ve received from the team to improve my legal skills has been tremendous.

What does it mean to you to be able to continue working at GoCo and move departments?

GoCo has been a great company to work for so it would have been very difficult for me to leave in order to pursue my career in Law. The fact I could gain experience in the field I wanted to go into and stay within the company is more than I could have hoped for. I’m very grateful to have been given such a fantastic opportunity and to gain such invaluable experience.

What would your advice be to someone who is interested in working in another department or discipline?

If you have an interest in a different department within GoCo, ask to spend some time shadowing an employee in the role that interests you. You will then be able to gain a good indication as to whether a career change into that role is for you. If you think it is for you, discuss with your manager to see how GoCo can support you.
